CyberBully Hotline: Tips for Intervention (Non-Bullying Incidents)

Application: When a Student Reports a Concern/ Incident Through the CyberBully Hotline other than Bullying for issues such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Substance Abuse
  • Self-Esteem
  • Self-Harm

Acknowledge the message by assuring them that you are here to help.

  • "Thank you for contacting us."
  • "This takes courage."
  • "What can I do to help?"
  • "I am here to listen."

Gather as much information as possible; who is involved, where, when, and what is occurring. Being able to collect as much information as possible, will aid in the planning on how to appropriately handle the situation.

  • Repeat back to ensure accuracy. "You do not want to come to school because you are sad."

As you are gathering the information, support the student in a way that allows them to feel safe and comfortable.

  • "Thank you for sharing."
  • "I am here to help."
  • "Our conversation is anonymous"

Reassure the student that is struggling that all steps will be taken to address the current situation.

  • "We will do everything we can to help you get the support you need."
  • "We are here for you."
  • "When you are ready, we would love to speak with you face-to-face."

At the end of the messaging, acknowledge their courage and thank them for 'doing something' about the situation.

  • "The first step is always the hardest, but you did the right thing..."

Once the report has been made, please give all information to the school mental health care provider, guidance counselor, psychologist, administrator, nurse, etc.
